Vincent Pinard Sancerre Chêne Marchand 2021

Vincent Pinard Sancerre Chêne Marchand is a single lieu-dit white from the most famous vineyard in Bué.

Sancerre runs across steep hills on the left bank of the upper Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc is planted on three soil types: the chalky Kimmeridgian marl called terres blanches, the shallow limestone gravel of the caillottes, and flinty silex nearest the river. Domaine Vincent Pinard is based in Bué, whose caillottes limestone slopes are the appellation's most celebrated, and is now run by Vincent's sons Clément and Florent, who farm organically and pick by hand. Chêne Marchand is the most celebrated lieu-dit in Bué and one of the very best sites in Sancerre: a compact south-east facing slope of shallow caillottes limestone thin enough to keep vigour low and yields modest, giving wines that are taut and saline. Pinard raises the cuvée in used 600 litre demi-muids, so the wood adds texture and a controlled trickle of oxygen.

Precise, mineral and long, it is worth cellaring and matches beautifully with oysters, langoustines and turbot; serve at around 12 degrees.
