Description
Vincent Pinard Sancerre Grand Chemarin is a single lieu-dit white from one of Bué's finest limestone slopes.
Sancerre runs across steep hills on the left bank of the upper Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc is planted on three soil types: the chalky Kimmeridgian marl called terres blanches, the shallow limestone gravel of the caillottes, and flinty silex nearest the river. Domaine Vincent Pinard is based in Bué, whose caillottes limestone slopes are the appellation's most celebrated, and is now run by Vincent's sons Clément and Florent, who farm organically and pick by hand. Grand Chemarin is one of the two great lieux-dits of Bué, a south-facing slope of shallow caillottes limestone over Kimmeridgian marl, known for giving Sauvignon Blanc a firmer, more mineral and slower-developing profile than the vineyards around it, and the domaine bottles it separately each year. Élevage is in used 600 litre demi-muids, large enough and old enough to add texture without oak flavour.
Tightly structured and stony, it rewards decanting or a few years in the cellar and suits scallops, turbot and roast veal; serve at around 12 degrees.
