Vincent Pinard Sancerre Le Château 2022

Vincent Pinard Sancerre Le Château is a senior white Sancerre matured in used 600 litre casks.

Sancerre runs across steep hills on the left bank of the upper Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc is planted on three soil types: the chalky Kimmeridgian marl called terres blanches, the shallow limestone gravel of the caillottes, and flinty silex nearest the river. Domaine Vincent Pinard is based in Bué, whose caillottes limestone slopes are the appellation's most celebrated, and is now run by Vincent's sons Clément and Florent, who farm organically and pick by hand. This is one of the domaine's top white bottlings, raised in 600 litre demi-muids already used for previous vintages. A cask of that size holds roughly three times the volume of a barrique, so the wood-to-wine ratio is much lower, and because the barrels are not new they contribute no vanilla or toast, only a measured supply of oxygen that broadens the texture.

Serious, savoury and built to age, it suits scallops, veal, poultry in cream and hard mountain cheeses; serve at around 12 degrees.
