Description
Vins de la Madone Côtes du Forez Dacite is a Gamay named for the volcanic rock the vines are planted on.
The Côtes du Forez is the southernmost appellation of the Loire, set against the Massif Central well upstream of the regions most Australians know, and Gamay is the only red variety permitted there. Dacite is a rock particular to the Forez: highly friable, it breaks down into infertile, grainy soils with less clay than is usual in the area, which restricts vigour and keeps yields naturally low. This cuvée comes from two parcels at Champdieu planted between 2007 and 2015. To give the young vines more depth, the domaine cropped them at 30 hectolitres per hectare. The wine sees only a brief maceration and is then aged in stainless steel, with no oak at any point, so the fruit and the stony character of the site stay in the foreground.
Drink over the next three years; serve at 16°C, or a little cooler, with charcuterie, roast pork or a cheese board.
