Description
Vins de la Madone Côtes du Forez Dacite takes its name from a volcanic rock found nowhere else in the Loire's vineyards.
Dacite is a fine-grained volcanic rock, highly friable, that weathers into infertile, grainy soils with unusually low clay content for the Côtes du Forez. This cuvée comes from two parcels of Gamay planted at Champdieu between 2007 and 2015. To draw more from relatively young vines, Gilles Bonnefoy crops them at around 30 hectolitres per hectare. The fruit is hand-picked, given a short maceration and then aged in stainless steel, with no oak involved at any stage. The wine is picked on the cusp of ripeness rather than pushed, which keeps the acidity intact and the alcohol modest. It serves as the grower's introductory bottling and a straightforward way into the Gamay of this remote, high-altitude corner of the upper Loire.
Drink young, over the next two to three years, ideally after twenty minutes in the fridge. Serve at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a lentil salad.
