Description

Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Pinot Noir is a biodynamically farmed red from the limestone soils of the Altenbourg lieu-dit at Kaysersberg.

Alsace is better known for its whites, but a handful of growers now take Pinot Noir seriously, and Domaine Weinbach is among them. Altenbourg lies east of the Schlossberg hill, just below the Furstentum grand cru, on limestone and rich clay, and Eddy Faller describes the Pinot Noir grown here as having a more velvety structure than the granite-grown Schlossberg bottling. The vines are planted at 10,000 per hectare from massale selections taken from the Clos des Épeneaux in Pommard, and yields are very low. Winemaking is kept deliberately consistent between the two reds so that the sites can be compared: a ten-day cold soak, up to two weeks on skins, roughly half the fruit destemmed, then a long ageing in predominantly old oak. The estate is farmed biodynamically.

Approachable now but will reward five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushrooms on toast or a soft washed-rind cheese.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
