Weinbach Alsace Clos des Capucins Pinot Gris 2021

Weinbach Clos des Capucins Pinot Gris is a dry Alsace Pinot Gris drawn from old vines in the walled clos surrounding the house.

Domaine Weinbach sits at Kaysersberg beneath the Schlossberg, and the Clos des Capucins is the monopole that encircles the property, first planted by Capuchin monks. The Faller family farms biodynamically. This bottling comes from the clos’s older vines and, although it is the domaine’s entry point for the variety, it is made with the same care as the grand cru wines. The fruit is whole-bunch pressed, fermented to full dryness and raised for ten months in large oak ovals, vessels that build texture without adding oak flavour. Dryness matters here: much Alsace Pinot Gris carries noticeable sugar, and this one does not, so the taut acidity has room to frame the flavours of nectarine, pear, almond skin and spice.

Drinking well now and holding for five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C with pan-fried halibut, roast pork or lightly spiced Asian dishes.
