Description
Weinbach Alsace Clos des Capucins Pinot Noir is a biodynamic red from old vines around the walled clos at Kaysersberg, made for relatively early drinking.
Alsace grows a small but growing quantity of serious Pinot Noir, and the quality at Weinbach has risen sharply in recent years; there are now five single-vineyard Pinots in the range. This Clos des Capucins bottling is the most approachable of them, pitched at roughly the level of village Burgundy, though stylistically it can just as easily recall the high-grown Pinots of the Jura or the best German examples as anything from the Côte d'Or. The domaine has farmed biodynamically for two decades from its historic walled clos below the Schlossberg. The old-vine fruit is destemmed and fermented naturally with twenty days on skins, then raised for fifteen months in mature Burgundy barrels before bottling without filtration.
Drinking well from release and worth five to eight years; serve at 15–16°C with roast duck, mushroom dishes or a plate of charcuterie.
