Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Gewürztraminer 2021

Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Gewürztraminer comes from 90-year-old vines on a steep, south-facing limestone slope, and carries around 48 g/L residual sugar.

Furstentum lies at the northern limit of the Altenbourg, where terraced slopes climb quickly from 300 to 400 metres up the Mont de Sigolsheim. The soil is brown clay full of limestone with a pebbly structure that holds both moisture and warmth, and the site is among the great Alsace terroirs for this variety. Domaine Weinbach farms biodynamically, and its style with Gewürztraminer stands apart for purity, balance and savouriness rather than the confected character that marks many examples. The vines here are around 90 years old and yield very little. The wine is dense and pure, with honeysuckle and exotic florals giving way to an opulent mouthfeel, candied orange and ripe peach, held by a bead of acidity and overt minerality. The residual sugar leaves it off-dry rather than sweet.

Drinking well now and capable of fifteen years. Serve at 10-12°C with terrine or pâté, chilli crab, or a washed-rind cheese such as munster.
