Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Sélection de Grains Nobles Gewurztraminer 500ml 2017

Weinbach Furstentum Sélection de Grains Nobles Gewurztraminer is a biodynamic sweet Alsace grand cru picked berry by berry, bottled in 500ml.

Furstentum is a steep, south-facing grand cru above Kientzheim and Sigolsheim, and one of the finest sites in Alsace for Gewürztraminer. Its soil is brown clay full of limestone with a pebbly structure that holds both moisture and warmth, and the terraces rise sharply from 300 to 400 metres from the northern limit of Altenbourg up the Mont de Sigolsheim. Domaine Weinbach, at the foot of the Schlossberg in Kaysersberg, farms biodynamically. Sélection de Grains Nobles wines are far scarcer and richer than Vendanges Tardives, requiring a berry-by-berry harvest and, for Gewürztraminer, a minimum of 279 grams per litre of sugar at picking; they also carry considerably more botrytised fruit. This was wild-fermented and aged in stainless steel for 18 months, and the site's structure keeps a wine of this weight from becoming heavy.

Drinking now and capable of decades in the cellar. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, a ripe Munster or a simple almond tart.
