Description
Weinbach Schlossberg Riesling comes from the family's highest parcels on Alsace's first designated grand cru, bottled here in magnum.
The Schlossberg hill is a granitic outcrop rising north of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim to between 230 and 350 metres, and it has been recognised for the quality of its Rieslings since the fifteenth century. It became Alsace's first grand cru in 1975. The Faller family, farming biodynamically, are the largest landowners on the hill with eight hectares, and they bottle a series of Rieslings from it, parcelled out by vine age and altitude. This wine is cropped from three parcels at the top of the slope, between 320 and 420 metres, where the soils are shallow and rocky and the eroded granite carries a reddish tinge and high magnesium content. Altitude, low-vigour soils and low yields give a dry, mineral Riesling with flesh held in check by freshness. Élevage was 15 months in large old casks.
Drinking now and worth fifteen years in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a plate of charcuterie.
