Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling 2023

This dry Grand Cru Riesling comes from three of Weinbach's highest parcels at the top of the Schlossberg slope.

The Schlossberg hill is a granitic outcrop rising north of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim to between 230 and 350 metres, and it has been recognised for the quality of its wines since the fifteenth century. In 1975 it became the first vineyard in Alsace to be granted Grand Cru status. With eight hectares, the Faller family are the largest landowners on the hill, and they bottle a series of Rieslings from it, parcelled out according to vine age and altitude. This cuvée is drawn from the family's highest vines, between 320 and 420 metres, where the soils are shallow and rocky, eroded granite with a reddish tinge and a high magnesium content. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Altitude, low-vigour soils and small yields together give a deep, dry Riesling with the freshness to carry its flesh.

Excellent now and capable of twenty years. Serve at 10 to 12°C with roast pork, smoked fish or a Vietnamese chicken salad.
