Weinbach Alsace Muscat 2021

Weinbach Alsace Muscat is a bone-dry, biodynamically farmed old-vine Muscat from the Clos des Capucins at Kaysersberg.

Domaine Weinbach takes its name from the stream running through the Clos des Capucins, the walled monastery vineyard at Kaysersberg that the Faller family has held since 1898. The estate is farmed biodynamically. Muscat is one of the four noble varieties of Alsace and is usually made in a floral, faintly off-dry style; this bottling deliberately does the opposite. It is a blend of old-vine Muscat Ottonel, around 70 per cent, and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, known locally as Muscat d'Alsace, rooted in the granitic gravel of the clos. Yields are kept low and the wine is raised in large-format oak, which builds potency and structure alongside a savoury presence and the salty signature of the Capucins soils. Winemaking otherwise mirrors the estate's other dry whites, though the Muscat is given a flash of skin contact to add complexity and grip.

Best drunk in its first five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C as an aperitif, with asparagus, soft-shell crab or lightly spiced dishes.
