Description
Weinbach Alsace MV0 is a skin-contact white from a single parcel between the grand crus of Furstentum and Mambourg, made without added sulphites.
Domaine Weinbach, at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg, is one of Alsace’s established names, and MV0 is its skin-macerated cuvée. The fruit comes from the Vogelgarten vineyard, the bird’s garden, an east-facing incline of marl and limestone sitting between the Furstentum and Mambourg grand crus, where the steep slope maximises exposure to the sun. The blend is seventy per cent Gewürztraminer and thirty per cent Pinot Gris, two varieties that ripen to real aromatic weight here, which is what led Eddy Faller to try them in a skin-contact style. The must spends three weeks on skins with indigenous yeasts, then eight months on gross lees in foudre, with no sulphites added at any stage. The vineyards are in conversion to biodynamic farming. The result is potent and fleshy, with grapefruit, blood orange and a grippy phenolic pull.
Drink now and over the next three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with a spiced tagine, roast pork with fennel or a washed-rind munster.
