Description
Weinbach Pinot Blanc is a dry Alsace white built mostly on Auxerrois, from biodynamically farmed vines around the Clos des Capucins.
In Alsace the term Pinot Blanc covers wines made from any of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, so the label rarely tells the whole story. Weinbach's version is 70 per cent Auxerrois and 30 per cent Pinot Blanc; DNA work suggests Auxerrois is a cross of Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir, which is why the two behave so similarly in the vineyard. The fruit comes from the Clos des Capucins at Kaysersberg, where the vines are around 45 years old, and from a plot on the limestone and clay soils at the foot of the Altenbourg vineyard. As with the dry Rieslings, the grapes were whole-bunch pressed, then fermented and raised over eight months in large-format wood, where earlier vintages were kept in tank.
Ready on release and best within four to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with a quiche, roast chicken or fresh river fish.
