Description
Dorli Muhr's Carnuntum is a blend of Blaufränkisch and Syrah from organic parcels on the lower southern slope of the Spitzerberg.
Carnuntum lies east of Vienna towards the Slovakian border, and the Spitzerberg is its most distinctive hill: a narrow limestone ridge exposed to the Pannonian wind, farmed almost single-handedly back into prominence by Dorli Muhr. This cuvée comes from several certified organic parcels at the lower elevations of the southern slope, where clay content is higher than on the stony upper terraces and the wines carry more flesh. Blaufränkisch makes up 65% of the blend and Syrah the remaining 35%, an unusual pairing in Austria but one suited to the site's warmth and wind. The fruit ferments naturally in small open-top fermenters, with the cap wetted by hand only occasionally, so extraction stays gentle. Maturation lasts 20 months in large wooden vessels and the wine is bottled without filtration.
Drinking now and over the next eight years. Serve slightly cool at 16°C with roast duck, paprika-spiced pork or grilled lamb.
