Zalto Spittoon 250 Red

The larger of Zalto's two spittoons, mouth-blown in smoked glass and made for a table of tasters.

Zalto Glas is a family glassworks in Austria's Kremstal, where every piece is mouth-blown by hand and made without lead, the bowls angled to 24, 48 and 72 degrees after the tilt of the earth. The spittoons are blown by hand like the rest of the range and come in two sizes: this 250 table model stands 210 millimetres tall and holds 2,600 millilitres, while the smaller 50 model, meant for a single taster, is 130 millimetres with a 610 millilitre capacity. Zalto's Thomas Zichtl explained the thinking to The Drinks Business, noting that fine producers in Austria and Italy present their wines in Zalto at fairs and cellar doors, only for the sampled wine to be returned into a plastic bucket or a cooler with a lid. The workshop disliked that Stilbruch and answered it with the Restweinkaraffe, as the spittoon is called at home.

Put it in the middle of a tasting table, or use the smaller model alongside it for individual tasters. Hand-wash in warm water without detergent and dry with a lint-free cloth.
