Zalto Glas is a family glassworks in Austria's Kremstal, where every piece is mouth-blown by hand and made without lead, the bowls angled to 24, 48 and 72 degrees after the tilt of the earth. The Universal sits between the White Wine and Burgundy bowls and takes on most of what falls between them. It is at its best with full-bodied, powerful or developed wines: the bowl lets depth and intensity show, while the way the walls turn in towards the rim keeps complexity and finesse in the frame rather than losing them under sheer weight. It covers most Italian wines, though older Nebbiolo is often better served by the Burgundy glass, along with mature whites and reds from anywhere else. Mature Chablis, Riesling, Chianti, Beaujolais, Australian wine of any age and grower Champagne all suit it.

The obvious choice if one shape has to cover the whole cellar; supplied as a six pack. Hand-wash in warm water without detergent and dry with a lint-free cloth.
