Description

AdamsWein Ingelheim Lohpfad Chardonnay is a precise, site-specific white from a small family estate in Germany's Rheinhessen region.

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region, a rolling landscape of villages and vineyards on the west bank of the Rhine, historically known for Riesling but increasingly home to accomplished Pinot and Chardonnay from growers focused on quality over volume. AdamsWein, based in the historic town of Ingelheim am Rhein, farms a number of distinct single vineyard sites, including the Lohpfad, and has built a strong reputation among German wine specialists for precise, terroir-driven wines made with a light touch in the cellar.

A fresh, textural dry white, it suits seafood, poultry and lighter, fresh-flavoured dishes.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.

Recipe

Rheinhessischer Zwiebelkuchen (Rhine Onion Tart)

Ingredients:

  • 250g plain flour
  • 7g dried yeast
  • 125ml warm milk
  • 50g butter, softened
  • 1kg brown onions, thinly sliced
  • 150g speck or streaky bacon, diced
  • 200ml sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • Salt and cracked black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Combine the flour, yeast, warm milk, butter and a pinch of salt and knead into a smooth dough. Cover and leave to rise in a warm place for one hour.
  2. Fry the speck in a large pan over medium heat until the fat renders, then add the sliced onions.
  3. Cook the onions gently for 20–25 minutes until soft and translucent, without allowing them to colour. Set aside to cool.
  4. Roll the dough out and press it into a lined 28cm tart tin, pushing it slightly up the sides.
  5. Whisk the sour cream and eggs together, season well, and stir through the cooled onion mixture.
  6. Spread the filling over the dough and scatter with caraway seeds.
  7. Bake at 200℃ for 35–40 minutes until set and golden at the edges.
  8. Rest for 10 minutes and serve warm, cut into wedges.

The traditional autumn dish of the Rhine wine villages, Zwiebelkuchen is a natural match for AdamsWein Lohpfad Chardonnay. The wine’s fresh acidity cuts through the sour cream and rendered speck, while its texture and gentle weight sit comfortably alongside the sweet, slow-cooked onions.
