Adelina Shiraz Mataro 2017

Adelina Shiraz Mataro is a Clare Valley red blending Shiraz with Mataro.

Mataro is what Australians have long called Mourvèdre, and in the Clare Valley it has a long, quiet history alongside Shiraz, planted for fortified wine and kept for the structure it lends. Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde work a small collection of old, low-yielding blocks in the district, farm them organically, and intervene as little as they can manage. The house style is savoury and medium-weight, closer in intent to the northern Rhône than to the bigger, richer reds the region is often sold on. This bottling has had a long stretch in bottle before release.

Look for savoury dark fruit with a dusty, herbal edge and the faint gaminess Mataro brings. The tannins are fine and dry. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with braised lamb, merguez sausages, a mushroom ragù or a plate of hard cheese.
