Description
Syrocco is a Moroccan Syrah made under the consultancy of Alain Graillot, the Crozes-Hermitage grower.
The wine comes from the Zenata region on Morocco's Atlantic coast, in the lee of the Middle Atlas Mountains, a long way from the northern Rhône but with conditions that suit the variety. Fresh ocean breezes moderate the heat, and a mix of red and black clay over limestone and ancient sea-bed deposits gives the vines a cool, water-retentive root zone. Alain Graillot, who built his reputation at Crozes-Hermitage, consults on the project and has argued from the start that Morocco can produce Syrah of real perfume rather than merely of ripeness. The winemaking follows northern Rhône practice, with a focus on scent and juiciness rather than extraction, and the results have improved steadily as the vines have aged.
Drinking well now and over the next five years. Serve at 16-18°C with lamb tagine, merguez or grilled vegetables with harissa.
