Alberto Oggero Roero Anime Nebbiolo 2021

Roero Anime is the finest and most structured Nebbiolo in Alberto Oggero's range, from 80-year-old vines in an amphitheatre of sand.

Anime is Oggero's more recent acquisition and has become the reference bottling of the estate. The 80-year-old vines drive deep into intensely sandy soil, so even in drought years the site avoids extreme stress, and the amphitheatre shape of the slope with its south-westerly aspect holds the sun well into the evening. That makes it a vineyard that rewards long, mild, dry seasons in particular. Roero's sands give Nebbiolo finer tannin and a paler, more perfumed profile than the Langhe, but Anime has the frame to carry age. The fruit was picked by hand and fermented in tank over 25 days on skins, then matured in Slavonian oak for 14 months before two further years in bottle at the winery, so the wine reaches release with some of its edges already resolved.

Drinking now and over the next ten years. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno.
