Description
Roero Le Coste is drawn from Alberto Oggero's grandfather's south-facing vineyard and is the most classically styled Nebbiolo he makes.
Roero DOCG lies across the Tanaro from the Langhe, on marine sands that give Nebbiolo lighter colour, finer tannin and more immediate perfume than the clay-marl slopes of Barolo. Le Coste carries more clay than Oggero's other parcels, which brings depth, and its 30-year-old guyot-pruned vines face south, ensuring plenty of sunlight in any vintage. That combination makes it the regional rosso in the range for anyone who wants something nearer to a traditional Nebbiolo d'Alba, though the Roero stamp is unmistakable. The fruit spent 25 days on skins and fermented in stainless steel, then went into Slavonian oak tonneau for 14 months, with a further year in bottle at the winery before release. The large, older wood shapes the tannins without adding oak flavour.
Approachable now and good for another eight years or so. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or hard alpine cheese.
