Description
Valle Dei Lunghi is a skin-macerated Arneis from 80-year-old interplanted vines in a parcel Alberto Oggero calls 'The Outsider'.
The plot lies within the Anime vineyard at Santo Stefano Roero, in the commune of Valle Dei Lunghi, and is sparse and almost wild in appearance, with guyot-pruned Arneis and Nebbiolo growing side by side as they would have done a century ago. Roero's soils are predominantly sand, but this site carries a higher share of clay, which gives greater extract and ties the wine tightly to its ground. Arneis is usually made as a light, early-drinking white; here it is handled like a red. After a hand harvest the fruit saw ten days of maceration in steel tanks, then 14 months of élevage in cement, followed by a year in bottle before release. No new oak is involved at any point, so the texture comes from skins, lees and time.
Ready now and capable of several more years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, grilled vegetables or a tomme-style cheese.
