Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco is the estate's village bottling, drawn from the younger Nebbiolo vineyards across its three communes.
Barbaresco DOCG sits on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens on Tortonian marl and gives pale, high-acid wines with fine-grained tannin. The Rocca family sold grapes and bulk wine here from the 1940s before Albino began bottling under his own name; his son Angelo built the modern estate, and since Angelo's death in 2012 it has been run by his three daughters, with Paola making the wine. The estate works close to twenty hectares in Barbaresco, Neive and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, and this wine takes the younger plantings in Barbaresco and Neive together with the Meruzzano mention at San Rocco, on marl and limestone carrying varying amounts of clay and sand. Ageing follows the pattern of the single-vineyard wines, about twenty months in oak casks and several months in bottle.
The most approachable of the estate's Barbarescos, though a few years will help. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
