Description

Albino Rocca's village Barbaresco draws on the estate's younger Nebbiolo plantings in Barbaresco, Neive and the Meruzzano mention at San Rocco Seno d'Elvio.

Barbaresco lies across the Tanaro from Alba, where the marly, calcareous soils carry differing amounts of clay and sand and Nebbiolo ripens a little earlier than in Barolo, giving perfume and a finer grain of tannin. Four generations of the Rocca family have bottled at Barbaresco, the winery in its present form dating from around 1960; Angelo Rocca's daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola run it now, with Carlo Castellengo as agronomist and winemaker. Eighteen hectares are farmed under Guyot and sustainable certification, ten of them Nebbiolo, for around 100,000 bottles a year. The wine has about twenty months in oak cask followed by a few months settling in bottle, and the estate intends it as the most adaptable wine of the range at table rather than the most imposing.

Decant it an hour ahead if you are opening it now, or leave it several more years. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
