Description
This is Albino Rocca's straight Barbaresco, made from the younger Nebbiolo vineyards the family farms in Barbaresco, Neive and the Meruzzano mention at San Rocco Seno d'Elvio.
Barbaresco sits on the right bank of the Tanaro north-east of Alba, where marly and calcareous soils with varying amounts of clay and sand give Nebbiolo a more perfumed and earlier-opening character than the Barolo hills to the south, without costing it tannin or acidity. The Rocca family has bottled here for four generations, the winery in its present form dating from around 1960, and it is run today by Angelo Rocca's daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola with Carlo Castellengo as agronomist and winemaker. The estate farms eighteen hectares, ten of them Nebbiolo, Guyot-trained and under sustainable certification, and makes about 100,000 bottles a year. This wine spends roughly twenty months in oak cask and then a few months in bottle, and the estate makes it as the most versatile in the range at table.
It is the most approachable of the estate's Barbarescos but still gains from a few years. Serve at 16-18°C with tajarin, braised beef or an aged Toma.
