Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco is the estate's classic bottling, drawn from old vines at Meruzzano and young-vine fruit from three crus.
Barbaresco sits in the Langhe hills east of Alba, in Piedmont, where Nebbiolo on the calcareous marl of these slopes gives wines of perfume and fine-grained structure. Alongside its traditional source, a parcel of old vines at Meruzzano, this wine now takes in a selection of younger vines from three Barbaresco cru sites: Ovello, Ronchi and Cottà. The winemaking is the same as for the estate's single-vineyard wines in all but scale, with three weeks on skins and maturation exclusively in large Stockinger botti for 24 months, so there is no small-barrel imprint. That treatment, and the quality of the sources, makes this a serious wine at the entry point of the range, with the fleshy power and precision that runs through Rocca's Barbarescos and a fine, mouth-coating tannin structure.
Give it a few years or decant it now; it suits agnolotti, roast pork or a plate of Piedmontese cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C.
