Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Angelo is a traditionally made cuvée given a fifty-day maceration under a submerged cap.
The wine was conceived after the sudden death of Angelo Rocca in 2012. Angelo had already been steering the estate back towards a more classic style, and his three daughters, in conversation with their grandfather Albino, the founder, decided to make a wine in the way it had been made in his day. Its success has changed the direction of the whole range, and two new wooden fermenters have since been installed. Angelo is a blend of selected parcels across the estate, typically 50% Ronchi, 25% Ovello and 25% Montersino, all in the Barbaresco appellation of Piedmont's Langhe hills. The lunga macerazione runs to fifty days on skins in a large, specially built Stockinger fermenter, and the wine is then aged for 24 months in a single 2,000-litre cask. Antonio Galloni has described it as a Brunate of Barbaresco, which gives some sense of the register.
This is the most brooding of the estate's Barbarescos when young and rewards fifteen years or more; serve at 16–18°C with braised veal shank, game or a mature hard cheese.
