Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Angelo is a cuvée the Rocca sisters make in memory of their father, blending fruit from three of the estate's cru holdings.
Barbaresco lies east of Alba, and its Nebbiolo tends to the perfumed and earlier-approachable side of the Langhe. Angelo Rocca had already been moving the family estate back towards a more classic style before his sudden death in 2012; his three daughters then created this wine in his honour, working from their grandfather Albino's account of how the wines had been made in his day. The blend is typically 50 per cent Ronchi, 25 per cent Ovello and 25 per cent Montersino, all from selected parcels across the estate. The grapes spend up to fifty days on skins under a submerged cap in a large, purpose-built Stockinger wooden fermenter, after which the wine is aged for twenty-four months in a single 2,000-litre cask and then held a further two years in bottle before release.
Give it five to eight years and expect two decades of life. Serve with braised beef, truffled pasta or aged Castelmagno at 16 to 18°C.
