Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cotta 2015

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà is a Nebbiolo from the Cottà vineyard in Neive, bought by the family in the 1970s and first bottled on its own from the 2015 harvest.

Barbaresco DOCG sits on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens on Tortonian marl and gives pale, high-acid wines with fine-grained tannin. The Rocca family sold grapes and bulk wine here from the 1940s before Albino began bottling under his own name; his son Angelo built the modern estate, and since Angelo's death in 2012 it has been run by his three daughters, with Paola making the wine. Cottà lies across the boundary in Neive, on marl in which limestone dominates with lighter amounts of clay and sand, facing south-west, from vines planted between 1962 and 1996. As with the other single-vineyard wines, ageing runs to about twenty months in oak casks followed by several months in bottle. This is the first vintage the family drew off separately, and the site tends to give a rounder reading of Nebbiolo than their cooler holdings.

Approachable earlier than the estate's cooler sites, though a few years will help. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, agnolotti or aged Castelmagno.
