Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cotta 2016

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà is a Nebbiolo from the Cottà vineyard in Neive, a site the family bought in the 1970s but only began bottling on its own from 2015.

Barbaresco DOCG sits on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens on Tortonian marl and gives pale, high-acid wines with fine-grained tannin. The Rocca family sold grapes and bulk wine here from the 1940s before Albino began bottling under his own name; his son Angelo built the modern estate, and since Angelo's death in 2012 it has been run by his three daughters, with Paola making the wine. Cottà lies across the boundary in Neive, on marl in which limestone dominates with lighter amounts of clay and sand, and faces south-west. The vines were planted between 1962 and 1996. As with the other single-vineyard wines, ageing runs to about twenty months in oak casks followed by several months in bottle.

Approachable earlier than the estate's cooler sites, but better for five years or so. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, agnolotti or aged Castelmagno.
