Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà 2018

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà comes from a micro-parcel of fifty-year-old vines in one of the great crus of Neive, and runs to no more than 2,000 bottles a year.

Barbaresco lies east of Alba on the right bank of the Tanaro, and its wines are typically a little earlier to open than Barolo while sharing Nebbiolo's structure and perfume. Cottà, in the commune of Neive, was among the first sites in the appellation to be bottled as a single vineyard. The Rocca family, based at Barbaresco itself, work a tiny holding in the middle of the south-west-facing slope, adjacent to their Gepin parcel of Barbera and directly facing the Ronchi vineyard. The soils here are sand-rich clay and marl and the microclimate is warmer than much of the appellation, which gives a generous style of Nebbiolo that nonetheless stays fine-boned in the hands of a producer known for restraint. The wine is fermented and then aged in large casks and older barrels before bottling.

Give it a few years and decant before serving at 16-18°C, with braised beef, agnolotti del plin or aged Castelmagno.
