Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2020

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino comes from a 0.42-hectare parcel at 320 metres, among the highest and coolest plots in the appellation.

Montersino lies at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso, and sits in the coolest and most elevated corner of the zone. The Rocca parcel runs to 0.42 hectares of south-facing vines planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca, rooted in very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca has pointed out that this soil type, known locally as the Formazione di Lequio, resembles the ground at Monforte in Barolo and some of the chalky soils of Serralunga. Vinification follows the house pattern of long maceration and maturation in large casks, and the cru was first bottled separately in 2012. The result is a more savoury, mineral and floral reading of Nebbiolo than the estate's warmer sites give, with chalky tannin and high acidity.

Give it five years and expect it to run for twenty. Serve with roast game, a mushroom risotto or aged cheese at 16 to 18°C.
