Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is a Nebbiolo from a small parcel on the western side of Ovello, in the commune of Barbaresco.
Barbaresco DOCG sits on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens on Tortonian marl and gives pale, high-acid wines with fine-grained tannin. The Rocca family sold grapes and bulk wine here from the 1940s before Albino began bottling under his own name; his son Angelo built the modern estate, and since Angelo's death in 2012 it has been run by his three daughters, with Paola making the wine. Vigna Loreto is the family's holding within Ovello, one of the historic core sites of the commune, on marl with a prevalence of limestone, some clay and fine sandy seams, facing south-west. The vines were planted in 1970 and 2011, and the parcel has been bottled separately since the 1980s. Ageing runs to about twenty months in oak casks and a few months in bottle.
Give it five to ten years, or decant an hour ahead. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
