Description
Description
Ovello Vigna Loreto comes from half a hectare of forty-five-year-old Nebbiolo on the south-west slope of Ovello, overlooking the Tanaro, and runs to about 2,600 bottles.
Ovello is one of the historic sites of the commune of Barbaresco, at the northern end of the zone where the land falls away towards the Tanaro. Vigna Loreto is a named plot within it on the south-west facing slope, where the soil is clay and limestone with a share of sand that the estate credits for the elegance of the Nebbiolo grown there. The plot is tiny, half a hectare of vines around forty-five years old, and the entire crop is aged in a single large oak cask. The Rocca family has bottled at Barbaresco for four generations, with the winery in its present form dating from around 1960; Daniela, Monica and Paola Rocca run it now, following their father Angelo, with Carlo Castellengo as agronomist and winemaker. Eighteen hectares are farmed under sustainable certification, ten of them planted to Nebbiolo.
It has fine tannin and repays several years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, game or a mature hard cheese.
