Description
Vigna Loreto is a parcel on the western side of the Ovello cru that Albino Rocca first vinified separately in the 1980s.
Ovello is one of the largest and most northerly of the Barbaresco crus, running along the slopes above the Tanaro on the western flank of the commune, where a cool, well-ventilated aspect gives wines of firm structure and marked aromatic lift. Loreto lies on the west side of Ovello, in the historic heart of Barbaresco, facing south-west on marly ground with a prevalence of limestone and clay and fine sandy seams running through it; the parcel carries vines planted in 1970 alongside younger material added in 2011. The Rocca family have worked here for four generations, from Giacomo in the mid-1940s through his son Albino and then Angelo, and today Angelo's daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola run the eighteen-hectare estate with Paola's husband Carlo. The wine is given about twenty months in oak casks before further time in bottle.
It will benefit from several years in bottle and should hold well beyond a decade; serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, game birds or aged hard cheese.
