Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is effectively a monopole within the large Ovello cru, on its sunnier, southwest-facing side.
Ovello spans a ridge in the north of the Barbaresco commune, with vines planted on both slopes of the crest, and within it lie several historically delimited parcels. Vigna Loreto is one of them, a tiny plot the Roccas farm alone, with vines of around forty-five years first vinified separately in 1990. Sitting on the southwestern flank of the ridge, these vines face the moderating influence of the Tanaro, so nights are much cooler than on the other side of the cru. The clay and limestone here is sandier and lighter than elsewhere in Ovello, which gives the wines more finesse, while the rules require Loreto fruit to be cropped 10 hl/ha below the rest of the cru if the parcel name is used, so density is not sacrificed. Vinification follows the estate's classical pattern of long maceration and ageing in large casks.
Best given five years and good for two decades. Serve with braised beef, a hare ragù or aged Castelmagno at 16 to 18°C.
