Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto comes from a tiny parcel inside the Ovello cru that is effectively a monopole and must be cropped well below the yield allowed to its neighbours.
Ovello is one of the largest crus in Barbaresco, a ridge planted on both flanks and long subdivided into historical parcels. Vigna Loreto is one of those parcels, and Albino Rocca first vinified it as a separate bottling in 1990. It sits on the sunnier south-west side of the ridge, where the nearby Tanaro moderates the season and delivers cooler nights than the opposite face. The soils are clay and limestone, but sandier and lighter than in the rest of Ovello, which is where the finesse of the wine comes from. Vines here are around 45 years old. To carry the parcel name on the label the fruit must be cropped ten hectolitres per hectare lower than the rest of Ovello, so the wine has to marry that lighter-framed elegance with genuine density of material.
Broachable after a few years in bottle and built to age well beyond that; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Piedmontese cheese.
