Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 1.5L MAGNUM 2015

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi comes from the family's oldest and most important vineyard, offered here in 1.5-litre magnum.

Barbaresco DOCG sits on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens on Tortonian marl and gives pale, high-acid wines with fine-grained tannin. The Rocca family sold grapes and bulk wine here from the 1940s before Albino began bottling under his own name; his son Angelo built the modern estate, and since Angelo's death in 2012 it has been run by his three daughters, with Paola making the wine. Ronchi is the family's most historic vineyard, in the commune of Barbaresco, and they own several parcels within it. The soil is marly with a prevalence of limestone and thin veins of clay and sand, and the rows face east to south-east, so they take the morning sun. The wine spends about twenty months in oak casks and roughly six months in bottle before release.

Magnum slows the pace of maturation, so this will reward five to fifteen years in a cool cellar and suits a table of six or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
