Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 1.5L MAGNUM 2016

Albino Rocca's Barbaresco Ronchi in 1.5 litre magnum, from the family's parcels in the Ronchi mention in the commune of Barbaresco.

Barbaresco lies across the Tanaro from Alba on Tortonian marls, less compact than the soils of Barolo, which is what gives its Nebbiolo perfume and a finer grain of tannin. Ronchi is the mention where the Rocca family owns most of its land and from which the winery takes its address; the soil is marly with limestone predominating and thin veins of clay and sand, and every parcel faces east to south-east into the morning sun. Four generations of the family have bottled here, the estate in its current form dating from around 1960, and Angelo Rocca's daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola run it today with Carlo Castellengo as agronomist and winemaker. The wine has roughly twenty months in oak cask and six months in bottle. In magnum it develops more slowly still, which suits a Nebbiolo of this structure.

Worth keeping for a decade or more, and enough for a large table. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
