Description
Ronchi is the geographical mention in the commune of Barbaresco where the Rocca family holds most of its parcels, and it lends the winery its street address.
Barbaresco lies on the right bank of the Tanaro in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo ripens a little earlier than in Barolo and the Tortonian marls tend to give perfume and finer-grained tannin. The Ronchi parcels are on marly ground in which limestone predominates, with thin seams of clay and sand, and all of them face east to south-east and take the morning sun; the estate holds that this is why the wine turns out complete year after year. Four generations of Roccas have bottled here, the winery in its present form dating from around 1960, and Angelo Rocca's three daughters, Daniela, Monica and Paola, run it now, with Carlo Castellengo working as agronomist and winemaker. The estate farms eighteen hectares, ten under Nebbiolo, with sustainable certification. Ronchi is aged for roughly twenty months in oak cask and a further six months in bottle before release.
It is worth several years in the cellar and a decant when young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or an aged Castelmagno.
