Description
Barbaresco Ronchi is Albino Rocca's wine from the geographical mention that gives the winery its address, where the family holds a number of east and south-east facing parcels.
Barbaresco sits on the right bank of the Tanaro north-east of Alba, on Tortonian marl that is sandier and less compact than the soils of Barolo, which is why Nebbiolo here tends to be more perfumed and to open a little earlier while keeping the variety's tannin and acidity. Ronchi lies in the commune of Barbaresco itself, on marl with limestone predominating and thin veins of clay and sand running through it, and the estate values the parcels there for facing the morning sun. The Rocca family has bottled at Barbaresco for four generations, the winery as it now stands dating from around 1960; since Angelo Rocca's death it has been run by his daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola, with Carlo Castellengo as agronomist and winemaker. Eighteen hectares, ten of them Nebbiolo, are Guyot-trained and farmed under sustainable certification. The wine spends about twenty months in oak cask and six in bottle.
Give it a few years and decant if opening young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or aged hard cheese.
