Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi comes from the estate's oldest and largest holding, the cru the family is most closely identified with.
Ronchi runs along the southern belt of the Barbaresco appellation, near the town itself, on celebrated limestone-rich soils with a south-easterly aspect. The Rocca cellars sit directly above the vineyard, one of the reasons the site has become synonymous with the name Albino Rocca. It is also the oldest and largest holding of the estate, extending to almost six hectares, three of them Nebbiolo, or roughly a third of the total area of the cru. The vines are now between fifty and seventy years old, and the combination of that vine age, deep clay and limestone soils, and morning sun on a south-east face gives a wine with both depth and lift. Winemaking follows the estate pattern of long maceration and extended maturation in large Stockinger botti, with no new small oak at any point.
Give it three to five years and expect it to hold for fifteen; serve at 16-18°C with braised oxtail, porcini or well-aged Parmigiano.
