Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi is the estate's oldest and largest holding, a limestone-rich cru that sits directly below the family cellar.
Ronchi runs along the southern belt of the appellation, close to the village of Barbaresco itself. The Rocca cellars sit just above this south-east-facing vineyard, and the site has become synonymous with the family name. Their holding extends to almost six hectares, three of them planted to Nebbiolo, which amounts to roughly a third of the total cru. The vines are between 50 and 70 years old and root into deep clay and limestone soils, so the combination of vine age, exposure and soil depth is close to ideal. Fermentation is long and maturation takes place in large oak botti, a low-impact approach that leaves the site to speak for itself. Ronchi is consistently one of the more aromatic and structured wines in Barbaresco, and it repays patience.
Best given several years, though a long decant helps a young bottle; serve at 16–18°C with slow-cooked beef, porcini pasta or a board of aged alpine cheeses.
