Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi in double magnum comes from the estate’s oldest and largest holding, a limestone cru lying directly below the cellars.
Ronchi is a celebrated, limestone-rich cru running along the southern belt of Barbaresco near the town itself, and the Rocca cellars stand just above the south-east-facing vineyard, which is one reason the site has become synonymous with the estate’s name. Albino Rocca is a third-generation estate based at Barbaresco itself, now run by Angelo Rocca’s daughters, working mostly from single sites and maturing its Barbaresco in large oak. Ronchi is the oldest and largest of the family’s holdings, close to six hectares of which three are planted to Nebbiolo — roughly a third of the cru. The vines are now between fifty and seventy years old, and the combination of vine age, deep clay and limestone soils and south-easterly exposure gives one of the more complete expressions of the appellation: wildly aromatic, deep and firmly structured. Vinification is traditional, with maturation in large oak casks rather than barriques.
The three-litre format ages very slowly and is built for a long cellar; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or aged Parmigiano.
