Description
The Ronchi Riserva is a cellar selection from Albino Rocca's Ronchi parcels, made only in vintages the family judges capable of long ageing.
Barbaresco sits on the right bank of the Tanaro north-east of Alba, where Tortonian marl gives Nebbiolo a finer frame than the Barolo hills to the south. Ronchi is the mention in the commune of Barbaresco where the Rocca family holds most of its vines, on marl with limestone predominating; the parcels that go into the Riserva were planted between 1950 and 1980. The estate makes the wine only when a careful selection in the cellar identifies lots with the structure to withstand time in bottle, and it is then held far longer than the standard bottling: about twenty-four months in oak cask, followed by about twenty-four months in bottle before release. Four generations of Roccas have bottled at Barbaresco, the winery in its present form dating from around 1960, and Angelo Rocca's daughters Daniela, Monica and Paola run it now with winemaker Carlo Castellengo.
This is a wine for the cellar; decant it if you open it early. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, game or aged Castelmagno.
