Description
Albino Rocca Barbera d'Alba is a small-volume Piedmontese red raised entirely in tank, with no oak at any stage.
Barbera d'Alba covers the Barbera planted across the Langhe hills around Alba, where the variety is generally given the sites that Nebbiolo does not claim and where it yields a red of high acidity and modest tannin. Albino Rocca is a family estate based in the town of Barbaresco, best known for its single-vineyard Nebbiolo, and this Barbera is something of an aside: one parcel planted in 2004 at San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, on clay and limestone just outside the Alba township on the edge of the Barbaresco zone. The clay holds moisture through the warm Piedmontese summer while the limestone keeps the acidity taut. Fermentation and ageing take place entirely in stainless steel, and the wine is bottled early. The intention is transparency rather than weight, and a Barbera that reads as direct and unforced.
Ready on release and worth drinking over the next four or five years; serve at 16°C with agnolotti, roast veal or a plate of cured meats.
