Description

Albino Rocca's Barbera d'Alba is a small-volume cuvée drawn mainly from a single parcel on the edge of the Barbaresco zone.

Barbera d'Alba covers the same broad territory as Barolo and Barbaresco but is planted on the sites Nebbiolo does not claim, which in the right hands makes it the best-value red in Piedmont. Albino Rocca is a Barbaresco house, and the lion's share of this wine comes from a single parcel planted in 2004 on clay and limestone at San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, just outside the Alba township on the edge of the Barbaresco area. More recently a parcel of twenty-year-old Barbera at Castagnito, on the opposite side of the Tanaro river, has been added. The wine is raised entirely in tank, with no oak at any stage, which leaves Barbera's natural combination of low tannin and high acidity intact and the red and blue fruit unencumbered.

Drink over the next three or four years. Serve at 16°C with salumi, veal Milanese or a tomato-based pasta.
