Description
Albino Rocca Barbera d’Alba Superiore Gepin comes from old Barbera parcels sitting inside two celebrated Barbaresco crus.
The wine takes its name from Gepin, the farmer who tended these parcels before the Rocca family took them on. The vines lie in Ronchi, in Barbaresco, and Cottà, in Neive, both cru sites normally reserved for Nebbiolo, and were planted between 1950 and 1974. That is the point of the wine: Barbera on ground good enough for the senior variety, which is rare in the Barbera d'Alba DOC. Where the estate's classic Barbera is raised in tank, Gepin matures for twelve months in large, low-impact Austrian casks and is bottled unfiltered, and the barrel integration has tightened noticeably in recent releases. The Superiore designation reflects the longer ageing. Old vines, a serious site and restrained oak give a wine with more depth and length than the appellation usually delivers.
Drinking well now and holding for eight years or so, it suits braised beef, rich ragù and aged pecorino. Serve at 16-18°C.
